How the cremation cost calculator works
This calculator estimates what you can expect to pay for cremation based on two things: where you live and the type of service you choose. Select your state (or enter a ZIP code) and pick a service type, and the tool shows a low-to-high price range along with a typical midpoint. The numbers are built from real provider pricing collected across cities nationwide, so they reflect what families are actually quoted in 2026 — not a single national figure that hides big regional differences.
If you haven't chosen a state yet, the calculator shows the national average. Cremation prices can vary by thousands of dollars between states — and even between two providers on the same street — so use this as a planning baseline, then compare specific quotes near you. For the data behind these ranges, see our cremation cost breakdown of what you actually pay.
The three cremation service types
Direct cremation (lowest cost)
A direct cremation is the simplest and least expensive option. There's no viewing or ceremony beforehand; the provider handles transportation, the cremation itself, and the return of the ashes for one flat fee. Families who want to hold their own memorial later, or who simply want the most affordable choice, usually start here. See our cheapest direct cremation guide for ways to bring the price down further, or compare the best online cremation services for 2026.
Cremation with a memorial
This combines a direct cremation with a memorial service held after the cremation. Because the body isn't present, you avoid embalming and casket-rental costs, but you do pay for the gathering — a venue, an officiant, flowers, and printed materials. It's a middle-ground option for families who want a formal way to say goodbye without a traditional funeral price tag.
Full-service cremation
A full-service cremation looks much like a traditional funeral: there's a viewing and ceremony before the cremation, which usually means embalming, a rental or purchased casket, staff for the service, and use of the funeral home's facilities. It is the most expensive cremation path and overlaps in cost with some burials — compare the two in our cremation vs. burial cost comparison.
What makes cremation cost more or less?
Beyond the service type, a handful of factors move the final price:
- Location and local competition. Big-city and coastal markets often cost more than rural ones; check the average cremation cost by state.
- Provider type. A low-overhead online provider is usually cheaper than a full-service funeral home for the same direct cremation — here's what funeral homes charge for cremation.
- Urn or container. A basic container is included; upgraded urns or cremation jewelry add cost.
- Death certificates. Most families order several certified copies, charged per copy.
- Add-ons. Obituaries, flowers, a celebration of life, and embalming (for a viewing) each push the total up.

How to use these estimates
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every provider must give you an itemized General Price List on request — and quote prices over the phone. Use this calculator to set expectations, then call at least three providers and ask for written quotes for the exact same service.
